Hello, all! My brother had this bookcase for years. Recently, he bought a vintage organ (not the body part... the instrument. That would be gross lol). His room is quite small, so we had to move some stuff around to fit the giant organ. It basically replaced the bookcase due to limited wall space. :[ bummer... So I wanted the not-so-lovely bookcase! I own more books than anything so i really needed it, but there was one problem... IT WAS HIDEOUS!
I thought about it and I knew what I wanted to do to make it mine. It was simple, really. Just primer, paint, and sandpaper. We already had the primer on-hand so I used a indoor/outdoor primer (in paint, not spray form). I found out that a small roller worked great for the large areas, and for the edges and corners, a sponge brush did the job fantastically!
After the primer completely dried (1 day for me), I went to Ace Hardware to pick up a pint of paint. I picked out "Antique White" in the Ace brand-it is white with a little cream added to it.
After I painted the whole bookcase, shelves, and doors, I let it dry (another day for me). The next day, I had some medium to rough sandpaper and sanded small areas randomly until it looked the way I wanted.
I found it was easier to install the shelves and doors before I sanded them, so that I can see how it would look when I was done. And finally, I was done! It had been a long 3 days, but I was happy and proud of my work!
Now, I was stupid enough to forget to take a picture of that ugly thing for a "before" picture. I was so eager to get that thing painted and moved in. I Google searched some pics of bookcases to show you how ugly it was. This pic I found looks similar, just imagine it all banged up and scratches all over it.
