This how-to is so simple, anyone can do it!
I purchased an old, beat up desk at a thrift store and made it into a piece that fits in with my other furniture. Sounds easy, right? Then let's get to it!
So, my desk had that cheap, old varnish look and the drawers couldn't even stay in their slots, it was so beat up! My guess was that it previously belonged to a 6-year-old girl seeing as I found some crayon scribbles, spilled glitter glue, and Hello Kitty stickers spread throughout the poor thing.
I wanted to give this desk his life back, so I quickly ripped out the tracks for the drawers, and sanded the whole thing down (by hand, might I add).
After I caught my breath, I gently wiped it down with a damp (NOT soaking wet) cloth and made sure I got in all the cracks real good, then gave it an even, fresh coat of paint. Lookin' better already!
A couple coats of paint later, I gently sanded some areas to make it look weathered, used, and old but not beat up! The trick is to sand the areas that a person would touch the most or something would give it wear. Example: I sanded a lot where you would sit. The decorative trim right above where your lap would be is sanded the most. Also I roughly sanded across the bottom of the trim where the drawers would be as if a vacuum scraped across it a few times before.
After you have done everything to your liking and are satisfied with your work, you are done! I am leaving the hole where drawers used to be blank for now until I find some wood to custom make shelves. So for now, I have filled the awkward hole with my sewing notions and collectibles! Enjoy!
